Welcome Message of MWIA Secretary General

Esteemed Colleagues, Members and Partners of MWIA,

It is with great honor that I welcome the delegates to the 33rd International Congress of the Medical Women’s International Association (MWIA).

I am joining MWIA President, Dr. Eleanor Nwadinobi and President-Elect, Dr. Amany Asfour, in extending our sincerest gratitude to the Government of Egypt for their invaluable support in hosting this historic event in Cairo.

We hope that the 33rd International Congress will serve as a crucial platform for sharing knowledge, experiences, and fostering professional networking among thousands of female medical professionals from across the world, representing MWIA members and partners from Europe, the Near East and Africa, Central Asia, North America, Latin America, and the Western Pacific.

I would also like to take this opportunity to reflect on MWIA’s noble mission and some of the key achievements over the past 105 years. Founded in 1919, MWIA is the oldest international organization advocating for the rights of women and girls, and for medical women globally. The Association was established at a time when only four countries – the United States, Britain, India, and Japan – had associations for women doctors. Since then, MWIA’s membership has grown from 140 female physicians from 15 nations to over 12,000 women in medicine across more than 70 countries worldwide.

MWIA achieved official affiliation status with the World Health Organization (WHO) as early as 1954, and with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in 1987. For over 70 years, we have contributed to key international treaties and resolutions by WHO Member States and the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). Additionally, MWIA holds permanent representation at the African Union (AU), the European Women’s Lobby (EWL), the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS), and other international organizations.

Since our inaugural International Congress in London in 1924, MWIA has held 32 Congresses, with each advocating for contemporary priorities facing women and female medical professionals. A key area of MWIA’s work has been the development of global guidelines on Women’s Health and Gender Medicine, and Mentorship for young medical women has been a flagship initiative of our Association since 1982.

For more information, please explore the Activities of MWIA and its Regions publication, released quarterly and available on mwia.net, that highlights the diverse policy advocacy, capacity building, and health service delivery initiatives led by our members across 70 countries.

The challenges of our modern times, particularly in the post-COVID global health era, place upon us a unique responsibility to renew our commitment to advancing the health, well-being, and rights of every woman, girl, and female medical professional.

In pursuit of this vital mission, I look forward to closer collaboration with you, your colleagues from the MWIA National Association, and our partner organizations across the public, private, academic, and civil society sectors.

Therefore, I eagerly anticipate meeting you in Egypt and trust that the 33rd International Congress of the Medical Women’s International Association in Cairo will further strengthen our collective advocacy and work for the health and well-being of women and female medical professionals worldwide.

With warm regards,
Dr. Mariam Jashi
